We have taken our own tents and used the Philmont-issued tents. As
part of a Council contingent, I would recommend using the Philtents.
They are stabile, weatherproof, well-ventilated and free. I also like
the team-building aspect of equipment check-out and check-in, as well
as having everyone in the crew with the same crew equipment. If he was
part of a Troop crew and the Troop was looking into buying backpacking
tents, my answer might be different.
