So while I can agree with John's initial point, don't buy gear you don't
need and I'll amplify it by saying you are already paying to rent a PhilTent
as part of your fees to the ranch take it or not. I cannot agree with
John's second point. In the case of this crew/contingent *everybody* else
will be bringing a tent, or at least that's the plan or the desired plan or
the message ... and so not bringing a tent puts this youth squarely in the
crosshairs of not doing what the rest of the crew is doing and sets him up
to be the reason that the crew doesn't get to go to town (over-rated in hy
opinion) or the villa (an absolute must in my opinion) upon their return
because they were tied up (pun intended Julian & John) in camping services
checking in a tent ... a tough spot for a kid.
That all said, just what tent has he been doing his shakedowns? .... they
are doing shakedowns hikes ... right? ... that is the tent that should be
going, it is the one he is familiar with, the one whose parts he knows, the
one he can put up and take down in the dark or/and the rain quickly ...
without loosing pieces all the while keeping the inside dry. If he is going
to bring a tent, he should already have it, otherwise the PhilTent is a
great choice because of its simplicity and because an expert will teach him
how to pitch it fast.
Failing all of this, that is if you are going to get a new tent for him to
take ... go simple. ALPS has a number of tents that have two poles, are
free standing (zepher and taurus to name two that he could master easily),
that will stand up and that won't cost an arm and a leg. ALPs provides deep
discounts to scouting units at www.scoutdirect.com. Further if your unit
hasn't bought from ALPS yet, register for the pro-leader program and take
that Zepher 2 home for less than $60.
Even in 1974 I slept under a tarp as the odd kid in my crew of 13 ... right
now there are several of you thinking "so what's changed" :-)

Subject: [philmont] Suggest a tent
Yep, don't buy what he doesn't need. Philmont furnishes tents, let him
use them. That is unless you want to teach him in a loud and clear method
that he's special and he doesn't have to use what everybody else uses. A
wrong message indeed,
John LeBlanc
Philmont 1959
1959 was before Philmont issued tents. They issued trail tarps and it was
like sleeping under the stars.
