[philmont] Suggest a tent

One thing that came to my mind was why is everyone bringing their own tent?
Would it make sense for 2 scouts to share a 2-person tent? Sure would be a
lot lighter in the pack and take less room.

One reason I question this is in many campsites it was hard enough to find a
place to pitch 4 or 5 tents, let alone 12. Another reason is a low profile
single person tent (i.e bivy) is not allowed and not good idea in bear
country, and many boys may lean this way if told to bring their own tent.

Seems an odd decision for the council to make considering they can all get
Phil tents at the ranch, which is included in the cost.

I agree with Jim T. that your nephew doesn't want to be the odd man out and
hold up the crew by being the only one checking in and out a tent in
basecamp. I disagree with the mention that 'going to town' (Cimarron) is
overrated. It was a neat chance for folks from the East to see what a
'bustling' southwest little town was like.

I'll throw in my $0.02 and say the Alps tents have been great by me and the
troop, and especially for the value.

Before buying anything, I'd see if it was OK if he and another scout could
share a 2-person tent and get an Alps.

I'm sure everybody has a favorite tent to take to Philmont. Nephew is going
to Philmont in Aug, 2008 with a Council contingent. In order to avoid a huge
amount of money going out all at once I'm trying to buy him gear a piece at
a time.

Right now I'm pricing tents. Suggestions? Favorites?
