[philmont] Tents - 2 More Generic Pointers

Seems that everyone has collectively covered all of the standard
remarks. I have two more generic points for those intending to bring
their own tents:

1) Most important, if your tents are ever used on "regular" Troop or
family campouts, be sure to give them a thorough cleaning before
bringing them to Philmont. Always remember that a single stray M&M, a
gummy worm smear, or a dried up soda spill, can get someone seriously
injured or killed. The tents we bring are used only for wilderness
trips, and the Scouts and adults who use them have had "No Food or
Drinks in these Tents" drilled into their heads - and on top of that, we
double-check them anyway. Don't forget this most basic aspect of bear
safety - which, by the way, applies to everything else that will be
going inside that tent each night (sleeping bag, pad, pillow, night
clothes, etc.).

2) If you can bring all the same model tent, it saves having to haul
around a bunch of different replacement parts - not a trivial
consideration for 10 nights on the trail, as anyone who has lost or
broken some funky looking 5-way junction contraption or a critical pole
for his space-age super tent can doubtless provide some rueful testimony
on. Again, all of our tents are Eureka Timberlite 2's, and one of the
primary reasons why you saw me soliciting for more of them last month
was to be able to continue to have just a single set of replacement
parts for each Crew's possibles kit. These of course are things you
will absolutely never need. Until the day that you do.
