You are sure to get multiple answers on this one.
Under five pounds for a two person tent is certainly doable, but I would
be at least a little hesitant to go much lower than four. Lighter tents
sometimes need "special handling" in how they are set up, guyed out,
etc. Single wall tents might be a bit of a challenge for younger guys
to set up right so that they don't get drenched in condensation for
example. Philtents tip the scale complete with tent, poles, rainfly,
ground sheet, stakes etc. right around three pounds per person (if
memory serves).
On one trek the crew used four person Eureka Timberline tents split
three ways. The guys had plenty of room in the tent, the weight was at
or less than the Philtents on a per person basis, and the only place we
really had a problem with tent space was Lambert's Mine - but we
managed. I think we would have problems at Lambert's with Philtents
too.
Happy Trails,
Roy Fisher
One last question (for now) - how heavy is too heavy for a tent? I'm
think I should try to keep the weight under 5 pounds. Is that reasonable
for a tent?
