2 - While it was suggested to each boy to bring a tent (due to the weight of the PhilTents), they were also advised that the tents had to be 2 person tents, and no bivies were allowed.
3 - He has a Troop mate who will also be going on this camping trip, so sharing a tent wouldn't be a problem anyway.
4 - Having a tent of his own isn't to set him apart. He would hate that and prefers to do what the other "guys" are doing.
5 - The troop has tents, but they are heavier 4 person tents (Eurekas and LL Beans), and the troop allows the boys to bring their own tents (if they want to) on Troop trips.

Mathmatical thoughts.
Why is each boy in tis troop going to take a two man tent instead of each TWO boys taking a two man tent?
Take the weight of one of those 4 man Timberlines and divide it by 4 and tell me whether that is lighter or heavier per person weight than a two person tent divided by 2.
The answer might surprise a lot of people.
Philmont recommends a two person tent because of the available footprint size at most campsites rather than the weight per person of a given tent.
