[philmont] Philmont 1965

Reading John's post about Philmont 1959 (thanks John for a great post)
lead me to reflect on my experience at Philmont in 1965.

I remember tent city when we first arrived. It was a great first
impression. Never in one place had I met so many outstanding guys.
Guys who were friendly and greeted you with a smile. Guys who walked
in a confident way that said they were on top of their Scouting game.
Guys who were sharply dressed in their Scout uniform.

I remember wondering how I would do on the trek. I had never
attempted something like this before. The immense size of Philmont
and its stunning natural beauty and presence were readily visible from
tent city.

The early days on the trail were a real challenge. The days were
bright, sunny and very hot. We were all young enough that we were up
to the hiking but those early days
were demanding. Getting the packs slung on our backs so that our
shoulders didn't ache took some getting used to. But we eased into
the trek, stayed together and gradually got used to the challenge of
the trails.

I remember how good the ice cold root beer tasted at Abreu, especially
after a long day hiking in the heat.

The great lesson Philmont taught me is that through effort and taking
things one step at a time you could accomplish something that, at
first glance, looked impossible.

I still have my arrowhead patch to this day and it is among my
treasured keepsakes.
