[philmont] Are Crocs "approved" shoes

Having watched Rangers hike in Teva, Chako, and Keen sandals on the ranch,
I'd assume that Crocs would be fine. I plan on taking mine in 2008, and
about 12 of our contingent used them in 2005.

I do not know of any hard and fast rules about footwear approval.

I don't know how you could do much better than Crocs for after-hiking wear.
I can also tell you from personal experience that Crocs can be used as
backpacking footwear. I wore them for about 4 miles on the Eagle Rock Loop
Trail in Arkansas this last March when I got tired of changing in and out of
my boots for river crossings. I felt one rock in the 4 miles I hiked in the
Crocs, and they sustained no damage.

Don't let the kids wear the Crocs for cooking. The holes in the top of the
shoes will make pretty blister patterns when boiling water is applied. We
require hiking boots for our cooks.

Subject: [philmont] Are Crocs "approved" shoes

At a Crew planning meeting last evening the topic of camp shoes came up and
a discussion of Crocs ensued. Are Crocs, and similar shoes, approved as
"closed toe" shoes in the eyes of the BSA? Some of us thought yes, some no.
Not looking for a discussion as to the merits of Crocs as camp shoes for
Philmont, just if the are considered OK.
