[philmont] Potions or lotions and Bears (oh my!)

Soap - CampSuds
Shampoo - CampSuds
Laundry detergent - CampSuds
Dishwashing detergent - CampSuds
Lubricant for squeaky external frame pack - CampSuds

Philmont will give you more CampSuds than you could/should use on 4
expeditions. You don't need to bring any from home.

The instant "no rinse" wash stuff isn't worth the weight. Carry a bandanna,
grab the CampSuds, find a stream, dip into the stream with a pot, move at
least 200' from stream, bathe. Do it EARLY in the morning for added glee!

I've carried bug spray and needed it. I've carried bug spray and never
pulled it out. I'd rather have it and not need it than need it and not have
it. It's "crew gear" on our list anyway, so we only take 2 small (1 ounce)
spray bottles per crew.

For sunscreen, we buy a 4oz bottle of Neutrogena (sp?) SPF 30 sunscreen that
has no fragrances. It has worked for us. Again, this is "crew gear" on our
list, so we go with one bottle per crew. I don't see a problem with
Bullfrog as long as it doesn't smell like freshly killed dear, bugs, or
orange Gatorade.

Subject: [philmont] Potions or lotions and Bears (oh my!)

Hi All-

I'm continuing to build up my gear, and advise others on this as
well, and I'm wondering about things such as soaps, sunscreen, etc. I
haven't done any camping in bear country, so while I have a collection
of things that "works for me" from past adventures, I don't know what's
likely to work and what isn't. In particular, I'd prefer not be
slathering on a sunscreen every morning that turns out to be a bear
favorite at night, that sort of thing.

Some is obvious; we leave the deodorants at home, a particular
trouble for the teenagers and their "Axe" spray or whatever. Campsuds seems
to be Philmont-legal. Probably don't need much bug spray... at least,
they were never an issue around Taos (the only significant time I've
spent in N.M. is at my sister's place, at 8500ft, North of Taos). But
can I bring my trusty "Bullfrog" sunscreen, or do I need to shop for
something specifically anti-Bear. Some of the boys asked about some kind
of "no rinse" wash (I told them "hey, it rains nearly every afternoon in
July", but that doesn't seem to be reassuring).

        Thanks for any pointers!
