Subject: [philmont] More Product Reviews
I've gotten a lot of stuff to test over the years and some of it takes time
or it is the wrong time of year to check out. Some of it I've been every
skeptical about and wanted to test it a lot more. Some of the reviews are
embarrassing.
One of the things I've been testing I sort of thought was dumb initially,
now I love it. In the past I've mentioned that I've used deodorant on my
feet to keep them from sweating and consequently from not freezing at
altitude. I never thought of any anti-friction issues from this. I was
given a product to try that was similar to that I thought, but it's not
worth the effort and I never have blister problems anymore because of the
way the new boots are manufactured (love La Sportiva's. Amazing Italian
hiking boots and their sandals make your feet love you.) and new socks..
However I had a reason to try this product. It's called bodyglide. It's an
antifriction stuff. You rub it on, like a stick deodorant where you have
friction issues.
I've been using it on my butt.. I've gotten in to cycling and the amount of
moisture, rubbing and raw skin there is unbelievable. I found some bodyglide
samples I'd been given and started using it and in two days I was walking
like my old self again. (I won't describe how I was walking the week
before...) If it works that well there, it will be great on your feet.
Lightweight no smell (I'd still stick in the bear bag.) and it works places
where you can't change the clothing or pad.
Underwear. Yes, I'm going to recommend some underwear. Now you know the
hesitation. Ex Officio has some boxes and briefs that are super lightweight,
super cool and super comfortable. I've worm them for a year, they hardly
look like it. I started just wearing it on expeditions, I love them. No
bunching (man I'm sounding like an advertisement for women's something or
the other..) just breezy and comfortable (that's it, I just crossed the line
didn't I.). I've been recommending Ex Officio shirts for years, almost 20
years in fact. I gave two of their shirts back that have been all over the
world for 18 years and they still looked good. Again, light weight,
comfortable and very functional. I work in them on river trips and wear
nothing else. I've climbed mtns in them and love them for backpacking. But I
was real skeptical when asked to wear their underwear. Wrong. So now I'm
sort of looking like a male model for Ex Officio, (which probably has them
quaking and hiding under the desk frantically writing disclaimers that
they've never heard of me and I stole the products..)
Sport legs. I am really starting to worry. A mix of calcium, magnesium and
vitamin D. I was given them by an editor to prove they were bogus. One of
the mags I work for has me do energy drinks, supplements etc because I don't
believe in any of the crap. So I followed the directions for sportlegs not
being able to wait till I could trash them. First day of skiing this fall I
was on the first chair and chased off the mountain by the ski patrol. The
last runs were just top to bottom boomers with my thigh muscles screaming. I
knew I would not be able to walk in the morning. Next morning I got out of
bed and ran downstairs with a little muscle soreness. Did not think about
it till I looked at my "to do" list which said trash Sportlegs. I didn't. I
had some soreness, but nothing like I expected. So I waited until this
spring when I started cycling and tried them again. Again, a little muscle
soreness, but nothing like what I expected. I've taken calcium, magnesium
and vitamin D for years and that never worked like this so the only thing I
can figure out is, it is the combination.
A scary aside on this product, I've asked several retailers if it works,
(yes) and how. I've gotten different and some weird answers from all of them
on how. I think they are making up their answers to some extent. But then I
don't know how it works, I just know I don't cry when I wake up arguing that
if my mind thinks I'm 20, my body acts like its 30 I should not be hurting
like I'm 90 and crying like I'm 3 months.
Socks. There are some amazing socks out there now days. If you have not
checked out the new sock ideas you need to. Some of the old sock mfgs have
finally caught up and some of the new ones are amazing. Too many to list
here but some truly brilliant innovations that work. Got to an outdoor
specialty store and look at all the possibilities if you are still hiking in
stuff that is more than five years old. Some are getting a little technical
(left and rights) that it's a slight pain. The sizing is getting very good
and very important. My favorites are Bridgedale, Techo, Lorman (?) an
another one I can't find right now that actually fits my calf. I have an
18.5 inch calf so on most high socks I cut the top strands so it does not
pinch my calf and these fit and did nod slide down. I'll find the mfg and
let you know.
Some general warnings. I also look at a lot of sunglasses. I sweat well so
I'm always cleaning them. There are some products out there that when used
on plastic lens sunglasses that take the protective coatings off or ruin the
coatings. I always thought the manufacture's recommendations where just a
marketing ploy to push a product. Well after running three pair of
sunglasses with plastic lenses by cleaning them with Zeiss Lens cloths I
learned. They work great on glass, but not on plastic. Most manufactures
have told me that Clarity lens cleaner works on plastic.
Disclaimer. I don't get paid to do this by anyone. I may have been paid for
the original reviews, but not for you guys. I have no relationship with the
manufactures, although some may be friends, most worry about me, some just
plain don't like me.
Time to work on some scrapes. I love mountain biking, I'm just not good at
it...
