[philmont] Are Crocs "approved" shoes

As I've previously stated, I've backpacked in my Crocs. I didn't have any
foot slippage, even in wet conditions. I didn't even have the strap around
my heel. I don't like wearing them like that.

That said, I've re-molded my "hiking" Crocs to fit my feet tighter around
the "dome" (top) of my foot using water and sunlight. This pair of Crocs
fits much more snugly to my feet than my "dressier" pair of Crocs.

Here's how I did it: Did my yard work in them, jumped in the pool to get
cool (with Crocs on), took off Crocs after the swim and left them in the
sunlight for about 3 hours. When I came back, they had remolded to a more
snug fit. I didn't like it at first, but now would do the same to another
pair if needed for camp wear.

I would imagine a "stock" pair of Crocs would do fine with the heel strap
properly used. The only time my feet slip in the "dressy" Crocs is when I
get water in the shoe. Once it's out, slipping stops.

I just saw a speaker at a Saturday morning church breakfast lead off his
talk with a joke about his colorful shoes which looked like Crocs. They
appeared pretty much like the pair of crocs that you can see at
www.crocs.com.
I wonder if the rear strap arrangement is sturdy enough to keep your
foot in the shoe. Probably it is OK in camp but if you needed to use
these on the trail as a backup I wonder how much your feet would slip
and slide in the Crocs. Would a camp shoe which has a complete shoe
upper body be preferable. The camp shoe at
http://www.campshoe.com/feature.asp
is a complete shoe as is the shoe at
http://www.muckbootsonline.com/Edgewater_Camp_Shoes_p/ewcsh.htm. This type
of shoe may be an alternative worth considering. The two shoes the two
links cited take you to
may not be the only or best choices.
