Mark-your Sherpa's are your scouts <g>! We did a pre-trek backpack this
weekend, 2 miles on Friday, 14 miles on Saturday, 6 miles on Sunday. I
spent the whole time looking at the backs of the packs of the guys and gals
in our trek. And constantly admonishing not to leave their advisors in
their dust. They are generally like Energizer bunnies. We were dividing
up crew gear and I had a 14 year-old kid standing there saying "I'll take
that, and that, and that and, oh, by the way, I can carry your crew meal
too Mr. Conkey?". And he had no problems at all. One girl with a heel
blister that slowed us very slightly on Sunday, and this was her first
backpack ever (she's on our Philmont back-up list). I'm very excited to
get this group on the trail at Philmont. They are already talking about
adding mileage to get a century in (our trek base mileage is 78 miles). I
may need a wheelchair when I come in off the Tooth, however <g>!

PS-to make you all jealous, I drove down to Santa Fe with my wife and
another couple two weekends ago (from Denver). While I couldn't convince
them we needed to hit the Philmont trading post, we could see ToT, Baldy
and Mt Phillips (plus all the other big peaks) from the highway as we drove
by on I-25. All the tall peaks had snow, but not solid (you could see
snow-free areas poking through). The lower areas appeared perfectly dry
(although I'm sure there are drifts in the shade). I'm ready, July 1 can't
come fast enough! YIS. Mike Conkey ('76, '02, '04, and '07).

Are Sherpas allowed at Philmont? I sure wish we'd known about that option
on our trek :-)

Stuff happens sure, but I might as well get a Sherpa and have him carry a
fully loaded extra pack, in case something else "fails" on the trek. Its
no wonder you see advisors schlepping fifty, sixty plus pound packs.
