I think I read somewhere that you will have better luck if you let the
burro choose you rather than you choose the burro. I'm not sure how it
occurred, but I'm pretty sure that's what happened last year with our
crew. I was watching the guys trying to round up a burro in the corral
without a lot of success, next thing I know one of the guys has another
burro, petting him getting ready to load him up. Andrew and Eyore
apparently hit it off, and Andrew became our chief burro handler. Eyore
wasn't too much trouble at all, as long as you follow the wrangler's
instructions - keep moving, stay in front, wait for them to pee in the
streams, and so forth.
Burros can carry about 45 - 50 pounds or if you have a full crew
basically most of your food the first day and maybe a tent or two after
that. Don't pack your lunch on the burro though, otherwise you have to
unload him to eat. And Eyore seemed to like it when we stopped in an
area that had some clover and other munchies.
Like others, I had mixed feelings to trepidation about taking a burro,
but I kept them to myself. Burro packing was one of the top five "have
to have" in our crew's trek selection process. Looking back, I'm glad
that it was. It was a unique experience to be sure. Just be ready for
lots of "ass" puns and jokes. And one of my favorite pictures is at
Miranda - when we turned Eyore back in - of Andrew "kissing his ass
goodbye".
By the way, my wife reminded me that Eyore is Roy pronounced backwards -
but I didn't tell the crew that.
Happy Trails,
Roy Fisher
