I'm all for hiking in shorts myself and bring a couple of shorts-type bathing suits from Kmart for that purpose.
I'm sure others on the list can give you the lowdown on zip offs and the more high tech pant. I haven't quite reached the twenty first century yet.
I will throw out this idea. When looking for an alternative to blue jeans for general camping, I've purchased a couple of pairs of regular work pants made by Dickies. They're a cotton/polyester blend, hold up real well for wear and for regular laundering, and continue to look fairly sharp over their long life. I get them at a place called Best Uniform Supply. No doubt there are uniform supply places all over the country. It's also a good place to get cotton/polyester hoodies and other types of sweatshirts and outdoor wear, particularly if buying in bulk. These uniform suppliers also do embroidery.
Maybe not the optimum pant for a Philmont trek, but certainly better than blue jeans for camping throughout the year.
