[philmont] Switchback pants, was: Hiking in pants

I switched from REI brand to North Face about 4 years ago. North Face is cooler in summer, dry quickly and wear like iron. 3 treks and 150 camping nights later, I still have the pair I bought 4 yrs ago. You can get them on sale for around 40 dollars at REI and occasionally Campmor.

You might try Cabela's Their Riverrunner or something like that nylon zip-offs are a decent pant. I took two pairs to Philmont last summer and am taking one pair on a campout tomorrow. Nylon with polyester mesh brief liners, zips at the ankles and about $20 - $25. Might even be on sale.

Am I the only one that isn't totally happy with the switchback pants?? I had to buy a waist size smaller and a 2" shorter inseam to get them to fit "correctly" but still am not totally happy with the fit. They are too baggy. I have a pair of the Columbia 'Philmont' zip-offs and I love them for hiking in both as pants and shorts, THAT was what I was expecting the switchbacks to be, especially for the PRICE they are charging! I would recommend that my scout try these if they weren't $40 and I was more confident in the product. I will say that they are much more comfortable than the standard uniform pants but I'm still quite disappointed that they weren't more like the Columbia pants.

The Columbia version is what I would highly recommend but they are closer to $55. There isn't an Academy Sporting Goods store less than a day drive from SE Iowa, you can't order online from them and it doesn't appear that you can call in orders either so those are out of the question. It looks like the best AND most economical solution is the Campmor product at $30.

        Thanks for all the input!!

FWIW - I've been doing a bit of hiking lately in the BSA switchbacks
and I love 'em. Light, durable, comfortable, belt included, and, as
mentioned, official shorts and pants as well. Best pair of zip offs
I've used. I like the fact they marked the left and right legs so its
easy to tell which leg to put them on.
