[philmont] Coleman Powermax Fuel availability in the backcountry

I don't know about 2006, but we took them in 2005. We carried 12 bottles, oner per person, not much weight, we used about 7. And that was with the adults firing up for morning coffee every morning, and the boys being a little less conservative than they could have been. Fuels was definitely available at the backcountry commissaries at Phillips Junction and Ute Gulch, but that was early in the season, our trek started on 6/11. If you carry enough, it's not a big deal, especially if you can get them home again (travelling by POV).

commissaries in 2006? If so, where? I have been given three pieces of "definite advice". Definitely available in the backcountry, definitely not available - but probably at base camp, and definitely maybe - it depends on the day, phase of the moon etc.

I have seen the discussions on the pros and cons of the stoves and the canisters and our crew has elected to take the Exponent stoves. We plan on carrying enough fuel for the entire trek but availability in the backcountry will determine how much reserve fuel we should take.
