Our Troop & Crew has done treks using a combination of Kelty Gunnison 2 & 4 person models. Very light weight all around. Three adults in a 4-man is much lighter for all concerned than either 2 2-man tents or a 2-man and a solo. Same is true for youth. One year we had 7 youth. We took 2 4-man tents. They all rotated so that everybody got a couple of nights as part of the 3 person group. If I remember correctly, the 7th youth took both ground sheets and extra food and crew to balance the weight.

I haven't poseted in probably a yearbecause I didn't figure I had anything to add.
On this topic I can add.
In 2004 we three adult leaders carried a 4 man timberline. The advisor is 6'4", the other leader is 6' and I'm 5'9". So suffice it to say I was the little guy and 52 at the time. I carried the tent, the other two carried the poles and fly. I also carried the large pot a stove and my 4 liters of water + food. Pack was weighing around 50 lbs.
We were doing trek 4. We fit fine in the tent. I was in the middle and was usually the last one to go to bed. I fugured they needed to fall asleep before me or they wouldn't get to sleep because of the snoring.
About the 3rd day I started developing a blister on the ball of my foot. It was weird since I trained in these boots and didn't get a blister then. each day the blister got bigger. we used a lot of moleskin.
The blister isn't the main part of the story. by the time we got to Cyphers mine I was glad to sleep in the wooden shelter as were everyone else in the crew. I got up the next morning and was repacking my stuff and I couldn't find my tent. I thought a bear took it. The lead advisor said that he had it and that I could take the first aid kit instead. He said I needed a break. I didn't argue.
When we got to the next camp the advisor said "why didn't you tell me this thing was heavy, I would have traded sooner."
So the lesson we all learned was that while we think that splitting up the tent that way was even, we propably should have traded parts every day.
Funny storytime. I snore, known fact in the crew and troop. one of the nights I was having trouble getting to sleep. I figured it was the downhill slant. so I switched ends. Fell asleep immediately. about an hour later sone of my tent mates was shaking me. I woke up and said what 's up. I heard this big sigh of relief and a voice saying I didn't hear you snoring in my ear so I thought you were dead!
We still laugh about it today.
Our sons are both having their Eagle board of Review on the same night.
Philmont is a great experience for young and old and my only advice is ask your questions no matter how simple it is. you'll get good answers and some lectures. use the first and smile and nod at the second.
Most of us mean well, we just get carried away.
HAve a great trek
