It is ridiculous. However, Philmont does not check birth certificates (at least not yet) when dealing with the 18-20 crowd. Sometime ago, someone either on this list or the Scouts-L list posted an incredibly humorous email concerning this very situation. If you are out there, please re-post. It is worth a laugh at how terribly tight we seem to wrap ourselves around the flagpole.

We also did a rotation with our crew in 2003. Our situation was different in that we had an 18 YO crew leader (back up adult) 2 over 21 adults and 6 under 18 crew members. Our crew leader was the odd man out due to age, the other 6 spent 2 nights with each of the other 5. The over 21 adults both had sons under 18 but we both waited until our home bound night in base camp to spend a night with our respective sons. This worked out great and helped keep the crew members from getting tired of each other on the trail.
This time around, we have 3 21+, 1 18-20 and 8 under 18. Our crew leader is 17 and the rest are 'legal 13' to just 16. This crew is made up of 10 members of my troop and 2 (father/son) from another troop in the council about 80 miles away. The 2 from the other troop are planning to tent together and the other 21+ are planning to tent together which puts us in a dilemma because of our 18 YO young adult. He can tent alone or he could tent with me (father) and the other dad could tent with his kid. The 3 adult rotation works but still leaves the 18 YO as the odd man out. I guess this is where I have a fundamental problem with the 'age rules'. My 18 YO son and our 17 YO crew leader have been camping together since they were 12 and 11. But now, because one has hit the 'magic age', they aren't allowed to tent together. I'm generally a 'by the book' guy but this just seems rediculous. I don't really want to turn this into a debate over the G2SS but I can't see not allowing these guys to camp together as they have f
or the last 6+ years.

I might have posted this in the past, so forgive the repeat if that's the case.
We went to Philmont in 2005 with nine boys and three adults. All three adults had a son on the trek so the adults just alternated tenting with each other, then every third night we would tent with our son.
We had a council contingent crew made up of boys from all over our council, so part of the deal was encouraging no consistent tent partners. We wanted the entire crew to tent with different crew members as a way of building crew cohesiveness. It worked like a charm, and the rotation of the adults with their sons fit right into the plan.

No rule against 3, we had an odd number of boys on a trek and used a 3 man tent.
