[philmont] I thought it was a Herring

On underwear, rinsing them to get the salt out is at
least as important as the type of material. Dried salt crystals embedded
in cloth makes for a great 00 sandpaper. Combining that with poor
hygiene and the (inevitable) result is not at all surprising.

There is no magic in the realm of diaper rash.

As Dr. Bob states above, the offending factor is the salt crystal. It's a six sided box that looks like it's been stepped on (that's an un scientific, but accurate description) and like the good Dr. Says, it's a scratcher.

As the perspiration dries, it leaves this on the skin. Worked enough is lacerates the skin. The salt burns, the bacteeria and yeast and some virus are introduced and what the immune system cannot fend off grows.

The bottom line is you simply gotta wash that area or placard it up with various and sundry putties to keep the wolves at bay.

I'm as guilty as anyone at putting off taking care of bidness in hot weather. I have that built in desire to finish the job whether it's hiking a trail or mowing the grass.

However, after it's all said and done, nothing puts the butt rash at bay like a good application of Desitin over clean skin.

Yes, it's visible in the shorts in the morning but you feel so much better that just doesn't matter. It works.

Vaseline and A & D are a little better at "an ounce of prevention" but all three will prevent the inevitable.

When I worked as a biologist at a state park that had a beach on the Gulf of Mexico, one of my standard supplies behind the seat of my truck was a roll of toilet paper with a small tube or Vaseline inserted inside the tube. I did not use one without the other and that kept the wolves away.

Whatever works for you will be the thing you need to do regardless of the smell.

And don't worry about A & D smelling like fish oil. When it attracts a bear to bite you on the butt thinking it's a Herring we promise we won't tease you atout it ever.
