The unsigned post from Cott1717@aol.com caught my eye.
The writer complains that Congress has much better things to do than to commemorate the BSA and that this effort would take up its valuable time.
The fact is that the legislation has already been passed, many years ago, to issue commemorative coins on two subjects per year. The time for considering which two subjects has already been set aside, each and every year. All that is left is to pick two subjects.
In that regard, the requirement that a subject get at least 290 primary sponsors (out of a possible 435) separates the wheat from the chaff. This really is not contentious stuff, more like filling out a survey.
The last commemorative coins I purchased from the Mint commemorated the Bald Eagle. Perhaps a Scout coin will happen without too much wasting of valuable congressional time.
Two things to keep in mind. 1)They only work 3 days a week, with numerous recesses and vacations, and 2) until the Democrats have 60 Senators, nothing moves unless the GOP wants it to, despite Democratic majorities in both houses, and the President can (and has) vetoed even that. Perhaps January will bring a breath of fresh air so our representatives can tackle the problems (what the GOP calls, instead, "issues") that cott 1717 has outlined.
Until then, I hope the BSA gets to be one of the two milestones commemorated on our 2010 commemorative coinage. By the way, the Government makes a significant profit from sales of these trinkets to those, like me, who buy them. Sort of like a voluntary tax.
Yours in Scouting,
Bill Sheehan
