I am involved in Scouts because I believe the program can make a difference in the lives of many young men and even in the lives of the adult volunteers. I do not believe my Congressman ( who btw got arrested the other night for drunk driving in Va) voting on a bill congratulating the BSA for being a 100 years old is going to make a signifigant difference in the image of the program, while it will divert his attention from the truly important issues he should be concentrating on. If the elected officials spent more time addressing the issues and less time worrying about their "image" or how to "spin" the latest piece of headline news we would all be a lot better off. BTW I believe this is a bi partisian problem. Neither party has can claim to be above this.
These are serious times and we need serious solutions, not another piece of legislation that is for appearances only!
I have read the book "Legacy of Honor" I am aware of Sessions and his Scouting background. That is all good. But I think his taking important stands on the important issues were raise the image of Scouting much more than the congratulations legislation. Would you not agree that to be able to point to a national leader who takes the lead in forming a national energy policy and being able to say to the youth of your unit that he is an Eagle Scout will in the long run be more impressive to them then this?
My kids are now in their 20's. Each of them is looking to buy a new car. Neither of them will consider any car that is not a hybird. They got that from their involvement in Scouting. They look at Washington and find no leadership. They are looking for it. Mr. Sessions and others all have the opportunity to catch these young people's imagination and to inspire them. I just don't think this is the way to do it.
But hey I know this would start some discussion and discussion is good.

At a time when the scouts are being virulently attacked as too traditional, too religious, too politically uncorrect, I think an endorsement from Congress is very helpful.
I think you should ask why you are in scouts if you don’t see how important it is in the daily lives of thousands of boys.
There are plenty of serious issues to be obsessed with, so one can overlook proper attention to the development of tomorrow’s leaders. They’re just little kids and they’ll grow up anyway, after all. And they don’t vote, either. Sorry for the sarcasm, your comment is just way out there, in my opinion.

Well I guess I will be in the minority on this but I just feel with all the really serious issues facing our nation from the economy at home, to soldiers at risk, for our Congress to spend any time and energy on this seems absolutely wasteful. If we were flying along without such serious issues as health care, education, soaring food and gasoline prices this would be a fun thing to see happen. But we have men and women getting killed daily without any exit policy that can be described to us. We have no energy policy except we know Exxon- Mobil is making record profits. Our seniors are looking at their food money not go far enough as the price of such basics as bread and cereal soar and the Congress is talking about the Boy Scout 100th Anniversary! There is just something wrong in this picture!
