There are so many different types of hi-tec shoes on the market today. Tevas, Keens, etc. have done more for footwear in the last few years than just about anyone. Some of their product offerings are acceptable for camp shoes.
Rather than offer a specific brand or model of shoe, here's my take on what a good camp shoe should be. Other opinions may vary.
Your camp shoes should be lightweight and should compress down in your pack so as not to take up much space.
Your camp shoes should have a solid sole on them. Aqua sox, for example, are a definite NO WAY.
Your camp shoes should offer good toe protection.
Your camp shoes should be good enough to be your back-up trail footwear. "Be Prepared", remember? You don't have to over-do it just so they'll be good on the trail, but think about using them on the trail when making your decision. Also remember the liklihood of blowing out your boots on the trail is only slightly above zero.
Your camp shoes should be a welcome relief from your trail boots.
Personally, I used a pair of cross trainers as my camp shoes. Very comfortable and very enjoyable to wear around camp. Of course, they were a full sneaker, not a sandal with openings on the side. They were great.
As for flip flops? Leave 'em in your bag at base camp. You can enjoy them on the way home.

Is there any official requirement of what can or cannot be worn as a camp shoe? Are tevas and flip flops allowed in camp? I know they are NOT on the trail
