In general I agree with John and the others. The rules are the rules
are the rules.

As a Scout leader that is the fair and final answer.

As a parent I am a bit more concerned. Can you imagine the fun that
will happen when the 7-10 young men (and women) return to their parents
on what should be the 2nd day of their trek? The parents who have
supported the program for a long time and have likely been part of
writing some mighty big checks for the participation, transportation and
gear?

This is not going to be a happy ending.

That said the rules are the rules but lets not be so flippant about the
consequences. We are talking about the destruction or many young
people's dreams. It is probable that most will never get a "next time
around".

Even in 1959 the skinny little kids got to go and they probably wans not
fluent with every rule and regulation in the book.
