I thought the same thing! I have yearly training at work that covers first aid, CPR and operating an AED. I'm a flight attendant, so the same concepts of WFA apply- you're out there on your own for what may be an extended period of time. We do have some nice equipment available but I've still had to use a tray as a splint for a woman who broke her leg getting out of the lav. Heart attacks, strokes, aneurysms, early labor- I've had to treat them all while waiting to reach landfall from over the Atlantic.
Most of the treatment you can give is just common sense. Maybe it seems that way to me because we have such training constantly, so the class didn't add that much to my knowledge. I would have liked more hands on!

Subject: [philmont] Wilderness First Aid
The good news, it is good for 3 years. I took it last year, and I felt like I did get a litle out of it, however, i would have thought for the length and cost of it, I would have come away with more, like actually setting a splint, or using a Sam Splint, or any other number of things that we did not cover. We seemed to spend an inordinate amount of time with role playing and "diagnosing" as opposed to fixing nine serious problems that may occur, But, that's just my opinion.

I haven't been keeping up on things here, but was wondering what the status of the Wilderness First Aid requirement? How many folks have the certification, and what will Philmont do if a crew get's there without the required certification.
Just wondering,
Tom
