I have a bit of a different position to offer. I cannot speak to 1959
Leaders as that was just a bit before my time so I will fast forward 25
years and talk about 1984 leaders. By the time I became an ASM I had a
very firm grasp on First Aid and what to do WHEN things went in some way
other than the plan. My peers who joined Scouting for the first time
attended adult leader training that got them caught up on the curve
pretty fast. Being prepared is what we did and who we were.
Move up to April 2008
I attended the BSA OLS class at my district in March. The instructors
of the class did the best they could with the time they had. We spent
an hour on First Aid. Never touched a bandage or discussed a single
real concern other than "textbook" discussions on hyper-hypothermia and
reminders of the importance of hydration. My "patrol" included Eagle
Scouts who could not shoot a bearing or tie a sheet-bend so First Aid
was not the only problem.
But all walked away as "trained" BSA Scout Leaders.
This would not have happened in 1984. back in 1959 they did not have
such silly patches to decide who was or was not trained so I expect to
hear the same from them old folk (hi John).
I see the WFA as a need to retrofit the worthlessness of the existing
BSA training program. We have seen the enemy and they is us. Well not
all of us, maybe just the ones in Texas who cannot take a leadership
role to "fix" the problem.
