OLS is what it is. The purpose is to acquaint the person (asm, sm) who has no clue with the requirements of TF through FC so that they can logically decide when the scouts have completed the task. It is NOT to make them experts, that treaining comes elsewhere.

That's why the real title of the course is IOLS (Introduction to Outdoor Leader Skills).

I attended the BSA OLS class at my district in March. The instructors of the class did the best they could with the time they had. We spent an hour on First Aid. Never touched a bandage or discussed a single real concern other than "textbook" discussions on hyper-hypothermia and reminders of the importance of hydration. My "patrol" included Eagle Scouts who could not shoot a bearing or tie a sheet-bend so First Aid was not the only problem.

But all walked away as "trained" BSA Scout Leaders.
