Alps Mountaineering has belts in different lengths and very good packs and
tents

Last year at Philmont we had a no-hips kid that just would not fit an
internal frame or a standard external. Our troop has Kelty Yukon Youth
sized packs with adjustable frames for the younger scouts and women, so J.
borrowed one of those and took it to Philmont instead. Worked like a charm
and held up very well. I think it was 3175 cubic inches, but this young man
carried 45 lbs in it (40% of his weight, but this kid is FIT!). An
advantage of the external frame is that you can lash items to the
frame. So the lack of large internal space was helped out by the external
frame. It now has a Philmont Key Chain hanging from it to designate it as
a Philmont pack. The younger scouts now fight over it when J. cannot go
backpacking with the troop.
BTW, the Kelty Yukon is available at campmor.com for $69.97
Oh, and if you want to see a picture of J. with the pack, look at
www.troop91bsa.org. The redheaded kid on the far left is J.
Cheers
