The thrifty man's way around this is to bring some leftover spice
packets from burrito and taco dinners in a box? (I hope I'm not the
only guy in the country buying those things!)

Spice, almost anything, adds a lot to the typical backpacking food,
both at Philmont and on our normal trips in New England.
