In addition to Philmont (3x), Jamboree (2x) and Sea Base, my troop has done
three home-grown high adventure trips since 1996.
1 - a week long canoe trip on the lakes in the Adirondack region of New
York state. Cost about $200 (included private vehicle transportation and
canoes. main cost fuel, food, and permits)
2 - a week long canoe trip in the Algonquin Provincial Park in Canada. Cost
about $300 (included travel by private vehicles (two day drive), canoe
rentals, permits, camping fees, fuel, food). * this was a great wilderness
experience!
3 - a 16 day trip to Alaska. Cost was less than $1200 per person. The crew
flew from Pa. to Alaska. Did a variety of activities - sea kayaking, ice
climbing, backpacking, went to Denali National Park (camped, but did not
bag the peak), and flew to a village (and camped) above the arctic circle.
Used guides and rented gear for several of the activities.
For 2004, we were going to do a home-grown trip. Hawaii, New Zealand,
Australia, England, or southwestern US were on the table for discussion. As
we were able to get Philmont reservations, we will likely set aside the
home grown trip until 2006 (Jamboree 2005).
For 2003 - even though a group of 32 Scouts and 8 leaders are going to Sea
Base, our Venture Patrol is talking about an additional trip - backpacking
in the Adirondack's or somewhere else in New England states....
With 70+ Scouts, 15+ trained leaders, and an active committee, our troop is
just starting to really to roll. We had a rapid growth phase starting about
four years ago. Now that the age balance is getting better, we will have
more venture patrol members and even more home grown high adventure trips.
There are so many opportunities (and so little vacations time).
