We have also used a variet of activities. We try to do something for the
older scouts each summer. These have included:
Appalachian Trail in the Shenandoah Valley in 1989 (13 scouts and leaders)
along with the National Jamboree (10 scouts and leaders)
Appalachian Trail in southern Virginia in 1991(42 scouts and leaders)
Philmont in 1992 (51 scouts and leaders)
National Jamboree in 1993 (32 scouts and leaders)
Appalachian Trails in New Hampshire in 1994 (47 scouts and leaders)
World Jamboree in Holland in 1995 (8 scouts and leaders)
Philmont in 1996 (37 scouts and leaders) also C&O Canal Pathway (17 scouts
and leaders)
National Jamboree in 1997 (19 scouts and leaders)
Tinnerman Canoe Base in 1998 (36 scouts and leaders)
Sea Base in 1999 (24 scouts and leaders) World Jamboree in 1999 (2 scouts
and leaders)
Philmont in 2000 (48 scouts and leaders)
National Jamboree in 2001 (14 scouts and leaders)
Sea Base in 2002 (40 scouts and leaders) The reservation was hard to get
this time.
Tinnerman Canoe Base in 2003 (40 scouts and leaders)
We will be selected an alternate to Philmont for 2004 on next Tuesday
The Appalachian Trail trips are fairly economical to do.
The troop has ranged from 120 to 163 members during this time frame, so I
think having some kind of high adventure program is essential to hold the
interest of the older scouts. We really do not run a true Venture program,
but include high adventure activities for everyone. Standard backpacking
trips are set up to start and end at the same place but with different
lengths of the trail for younger and older scouts. We go whitewater rafting
on the New River almost every year with Class I-III rapids on the upper New
for the younger scouts to run in one- and two-man rubber duckies and Class
II-V rapids for the older scouts to run in rafts. We also run our own 4-day
leadership and scout skills camp each summer which is run by the older
scouts who select and trail the staff with no adult help. This has allowed
us to have older scouts involved with the troop and really run it. I have
had some teenagers function as the "adult advisor" in several areas and do
an extremely good job with it.
