Taovagus@aol.com asks...

What is the best way to say to a parent who wants to go , but is not as
active in the troop as others . Should parents who have attended before not
be able to go before those who haven't? Any other comments?

What we did in recruiting our 2004 crews was to set the criteria for
selection in advance (ours happened to be first come with a deposit, first
served) with no restrictions on rank, etc. As it happens, none of the
boys from our prior Philmont crews will be eligble in 2004 - if they had,
we probably would have included a preference for first-timers over
repeaters.

And we have a lot of fathers interested (actually one more than can be
accomodated, at least at this point in time) - they are on the same first
come, first serve basis. Several are presently not registered, but will
be come our February re-chartering, and hopefully will become more active
in general. The extra one actually expressed interest weeks before a
number of the others, but the others all put up an "earnest money" deposit
well before him, and thus jumped over him on the crew roster. But he had
fair warning - our criteria was stated from the start.

Two leaders with Philmont experience who would be interested in those
crews (myself and Tom Wills) set the criteria and held ourselves out, as
did the other adults who do not have sons eligible for the trip. So, the
entire crews will be first-timers. While Philmont experience on the crew
is nice, it is not essential, especially if those with experience help
train/develop the crew.

It may be too late for you to set the criteria before recruiting now, but
I strongly recommend it to anyone else - know and be clear from the
beginning how you will deal with a "waiting list", whatever your criteria
is.
