A dual post - two for one! Such a deal....
>For others, according to the Philmont material, the OA
>Trail Crew fee is $100 in 2003 and $125 in 2004.
Quick background - Our troop is just about to start our 6th year. We
started with 8 boys, we now hold down our registration at 80. We
just got organized enough to get two crews into Philmont in 2004. I
went as a scout, with my parents taking training, I was able to
backpack in a provisional group. (I was a new scout, still only 10,
but graduated into the 6th grade. I guess the rules have changed!)
I'm very excited for our scouts, especially since I will be able to
take both of my boys with me on these crews.
Anyway, I'm now faced with the dilemma of having a large backlog of
scouts (and advisors) who have never been to Philmont. In all
likelihood, someone is going to get left behind. Also, some of our
newest scouts are looking forward to being able to go, sometime in
their scout experience. We do a High Adventure trip every year -
Sierra's, a 50 miler, the Tetons, canoeing down the Colorado, biking
to San Diego. Based on what I've read from you all here, I'm going
to suggest some alternatives for scouts and their parents for the
future.
I called my council, and discovered that they don't have any council
contingents for Philmont. The reason? No one has organized it. I'm
thinking that in 2005 or 2006 we should organize one, and since I'll
be "seasoned" by one trip, I might be the right person to do it.
I'll also not be Scoutmaster any more (I'm hoping to start the
ASM-High Adventure position, or work with a local Venturing Crew).
My question is: What's the process for a council, who has never
applied before, to get in line for a council contingent? My council
is going to have a lot of interest, but I don't think I'm going to
want to put together a huge group. (No way I'm dealing with 13 crews!)
Finally, as for SVEA's: I rebuilt the two I had as a youth, and I
still pack one of them on most trips. It's a great backup to our
other stoves, (we use the new Primus Himalaya multi fuel - it can
burn white gas or butane canisters - and the MSR Dragonfly) and I
always have a stove available for me to heat my water for coffee. I
especially like the SVEA for weekend trips, it carries plenty of fuel
for the trip and I don't have to have extra fuel bottles.
