I'd like to once again plug my base for people wanting an alternative -
especially for people wanting an adventure in the Glacier National Park
area. We're inexpensive (when you take the dollar into account) and we're
going to run a great program in 2003 and 2004.
I've heard great things as well about Montana's Grizzly base just south of
Glacier, though I don't know about prices.
Same goes for Northern Tier - who _always_ have spaces available for canoe
treks at at least one of their bases. Last year I booked our trek out of
Atikokan in January. It didn't give me much planning time, but it can be
done. The scouts who went from Vulcan, AB loved the trip! I've never seen
any reason to go with anyone but them - I've done outfitter trips and they
rarely really understand Scouts or are as experienced as Ntier is (they've
been doing it for somewhere around 80 years now and a lot of Canoeing and
Winter camping gear can be traced directly back to that base - PFDs, Peak 1
stoves, etc).
Sea Base in Florida may fill up, but the Toronto Brigantine rarely does.
It's not a Scouting program, but it gives young people the chance to sail on
a tall ship in the Great Lakes. I've never been, but I've always been
jealous of my friends who did.
Most councils have some type of horse trekking program available at least in
a limited fashion (ours in based in the Rockies, but only runs for four
weeks and always fills up).
For real adventurous types you could check out some of the high adventure
programs in Scotland. They call them activity centres over there and have
names like Lochgoilhead (no, I'm not making that up). They run a great
program and you could always hop over to Kanderstaag in Switzerland for a
bit more of an international experience.
Just a couple more ideas for you
Mike
