Calvin just triggered something in my (not too wonderful) memory:
"which includes the .... and a contingent duffle bag"
When we went last (suumer 2001), we put our packs in military style
canvas duffel bags, both to protect them from snagging & other mishaps,
and to have someplace to stash our travelling closthes, icluding class
A's (don't mean to start THAT thread again!) while we were on the trail.
I recall that the airlines are now charging $80/bag for oversize bags --
while I haven't dragged it out to measure, I'd guess that the duffel
would be consideeralbly more than 64 inches H+W+L.
Did anyone encounter this fee last summer or in the fall?
Comment...
While I suspect the "contingent duffle bag" Calvin mentioned is more of a
small carry-on (that certainly is what Patriots' Path provides to each
member of the council contingent), in answer to your question:
Several members of our Autumn Adventure crew used very large (mine is 50"
x 30") duffle bags for our packs in September. The rest of the crew used
airline supplied plastic baggage bags, secured with duct tape. While we
had heard of that $80 oversized charge you asked about, it never came up
at check-in (United) on either flight.
