Good comments and lots of ideas for consideration. I would add one
other criteria and that is a burning desire and commitment to *do
whatever it takes* to be prepared for Philmont.

 Wanting to go, and being first in line with a check, but setting at
home and not getting in condition is a gross disservice to those who
want to go and are out walking and backpacking etc. and waiting in case
there is an opening.
