[Philmont]: All Scouts DO Have a Chance to Attend Philmont

Several people have objected to a new Philmont reservation system, or
have suggested that a troop be able to book a reservation only every
three or four years, because ALL Scouts should have an opportunity to
attend Philmont.

Well, all Scouts (and all adults) DO have an opportunity to attend
Philmont as long as they meet the age/weight requirements. While
everyone may not have an opportunity to take part in a regular summer
backpacking trek, there are many, many other opportunities for young
people (and adults) to attend Philmont.

My troop has been successful in booking a backpacking expedition only
ONCE (for 1999) during the past SIX telephone call-ins. Yet, every
Scout and every adult wanting to enjoy the Philmont experience has been
able to do so. How? Well, we take advantage of our OPPORTUNITIES to
attend in other ways. Here are some of the "other ways" in which we've
been able to take advantage:

        2 Cavalcade treks (1998 & 2003)
2 Crews in our Council's Backpacking Contingent (2002)
        2 Kanik "Spring Break" Adventures (2000 & 2002)
        5 All Adult Autumn Adventures - (1998, 1999, 2000, 2001 & 2002)

We've also had individuals take part in Rayado, attend NJLIC, staff
NJLIC, be on the summer seasonal staff and take part in Mountain Treks
when parents were at the Philmont Training Center. There are other
programs in which we haven't taken part, including OA Trail Crew,
R.O.C.S. and Ranch Hands.

So, if you have Scouts and adults wanting to attend Philmont, check out
the other ways of attending. Many of the provisional programs for young
people (Rayado, OA Trail Crew, Ranch Hands & R.O.C.S.) have crew slots
which are never filled.
