Tom,

Over a third of the Monmouth Council (NJ) contingent in 2002 used the
oversize duffel bags including all four of my family and we did not exceed
the extra cost limits on United Airlines out of Newark. They worked very
well. We used the XXL Kelty (87585) from Campmor $39.99. It measures 40 x
24 x 20 and held an extra long Jansport Ranier external frame pack fully
loaded along with all other items not going on the trail and souvenirs on the
way back admirably.

We used small key locks to provide moderate security connecting two main #10
zippers together but allowing easy opening for airport security. Does seem
like 84 total inches exceeds the spec you cited so I would recheck your
airline and try and get waiver in writing in advance. I thought when we
checked it was 96 total but better safe than sorry or poorer by $80 a Scout.

With the packs out of them the now flattened out duffels for a Crew of twelve
fit fine in the two lockers supplied at Philmont Base Camp. We put labelled
keys in the envelope in case someone had to come off the mountain and access
the lockers (only accessible by advisors) so moderate personal security for
souvenirs was maintained even while on the trail within the lockers.

Yours in Scouting,
