I have used the nylon mesh bags since 1980. They were hospital laundry bags to be exact and were strong and lightweight. One still has a repaired hole in it from my only bear incident at Lambert's Mine in '82. I have not carried the Philmont bags except for one year that they insisted. We used mine and never did use theirs.
To hoist them up I always took an extra tent stake and wove it back and forth through the top of the mesh. Tie a clove hitch right below with the bear rope and it definitely will stay up there all night. In the morning, pull the stake out and it's loose. It works great.
