LOL. Yep, we did have fun with those on the American Frontiers Public Lands
Journey trek. And I just had to try walking with the strobe on one time.
Let me tell you, walking through the cholla and prickly pear with the
strobe flashing gives you a whole new definition of vertigo. Wheeeee!
Seriously, though, the strobes are useful for emergencies. We had the North
Team coming in after dark to a location that was not on the mapped route,
and one of the support team had to go meet them. The strobes could be seen
for better than a mile and make joining th two teams in the dark much
easier. Now the South team never got lost in the dark, I am glad to
say. Only in the daylight LOL!

BTW, being on the support team for this trek was great, but give me Scouts
ANYDAY! We (South) put the Fun back into dysfunctional. Imagine having a
team of 12, the 4 trekkers are used to solo-ing, one is used to sherpas
(treated me like one), logistics support was late or gone, and I was
supposed to be in charge of feeding this bunch. Can you spell duty
roster? They could not. So the menus were done by committee (know the
definition of a camel? A horse built by a committee), we had all fire-bans
all the time, so had tailgate cooking supplies and equipment and could not
use charcoal, and whiners about food.
BUT it was a grand 60 days, truly once in a lifetime, and the scenery was
gorgeous. And I will never complain about pit toilets again. Charlie
Thiorpe, scouter from LNT fame, was the team leader on Team North and
Stpehen Braunlich, a Venturer from Coops Crew, waws on North Support. I
wish I had been with them. Scouters know what to do and when to do it.

Man, the Scouts really have their act together!!

Trek On!
