In 2000 I was advisor of a crew of 8 Scouts and 3 Scouters from 7 different
units
There was only father-son pair.
Neither I nor the third Advisor had sons on the crew
We did trek 33, the longest in the book that year.
We did Black Mountain with packs on
We did Baldy Mountain without a layover
We hiked from Aspen Springs to Santa Claus in one day
We were a very varied crew with youth aged from Philmont's minimum to 18
years old
Most had never met each other before the first meeting
But this Saturday, November 8, 2003 -
I am going to the presentation of the Eighth Eagle Scout Award to a member
of this crew -
Yes, that's correct - 8 out of 8 Eagles from this provisional crew!!!
Okay - three had their Eagles before we left
But 8 of 8 is still great -
For example - Big Mike told us many times on the trail, I'm in Scouting for
fun not advancement
Last year he made his Eagle after seeing how the two work together and
he said he earned his Eagle to set the right example for the new boys in his
troop.
My 1997 Troop Crew got to 7 of 8
And its too soon to know about my 2002 crew
And so I said final report -
Philmont has worked its magic on another group of men
and they succeeded and all achieved Scouting's ultimate honor -
But it is truly not the final report as I am sure these men will go on to
lead others back to Philmont over the years and continue in Scouting as
adults
