RE: [Philmont]: Request for 2004 participants to announce their plans

Keep your Crew "Clear and copious." I've had lots of altitude
headache issues that were really dehydration.

Continue your efforts to be aerobically fit.

Make sure your Crew is disciplined and know what is expected of
them. This reduces stress the first couple of days when they are
tired and O2 deprived.

All us flatlanders can do without a hypobaric chamber.

Hi:

My twin 14 year olds and I are headed to Philmont in 2004 with the
Tidewater Council (southeast Virginia) contingent. Just bought two
used packs and a Whisperlite from an OA friend.

I've been running and lifting weights in preparation for the trek.
I meant to do Philmont in 1967 but somehow got sidetracked, so this
is definitely a pilgrimage for me.

I'm concerned about the altitude at Philmont. I've been living at
sea level for 24+ years. This summer while on vacation in Idaho I
ran at 5,000 feet and experienced headaches. Any altitude
preparation suggestions? Us flatlanders need all the help we can
get.

Many thanks to everyone for their ideas and suggestions.

Subject: [Philmont]: Request for 2004 participants to announce
their plans

This mailing list has been relatively quiet for the past four to six
weeks
so I want to make a request.

I have approved 54 new subscriptions since October 1, and the
current number
of subscriptions is 740. We all like to discuss anything Philmont
and the
best discussions start with questions about preparing for next
year's
camping or training programs.

I didn't make it to the Ranch this year, and my unit didn't get an
expedition or cavalcade for 2004. Last Saturday I got to talk to
Doug
Palmer of PSR, and two ex-philstaffers, at the Longhorn Council's
University
of Scouting. It sure gave me the itch to find a way to go in 2004,
be it
Kanik, PTC, or Autumn Adventure. If I could turn back time, then
R.O.C.S,
OA trail crew, Ranch Hand, Philstaff, Philbreak, or maybe even
Rayado, would
be in my plans.

So my request is for those of you with trips planned in 2004 to
speak up and
make me envious. Tell me which program you are attending, the dates
and/or
expedition number, and if this is your first trip to Philmont. Some
of you
have what many of us can't ever have again - the anticipation of a
first
visit to "Scouting Paradise".

If you aren't going but other family members, unit members, or
friends are,
let me know about their plans as well.

If you have never posted to this list before, just send an email
message to
philmont@troop47.com and the listserver will process it. I look
forward to
seeing your posts arriving throughout the next week.

Thanks,
