Go with internal frame. Easier to carry, fit better, more comfortable. The reason why external frames are being outside 5 to 1 by internal frames. The internal frames used to be mountainsmiths, but I don't know anymore.

  Subject: [Philmont]: Backpacks

Apparently Philmont will rent external framed packs. I have 2 adults that are considering renting. Has anyone had an experience with these packs? Condition? Size? Comfort? I would think that if they are available at Philmont, they would be big enough, and in 10 day useage condition, but don't want to find out otherwise once we get there. Anyone shed light on this?
