Bob,
Having been to Philmont only once, but having done a lot of preparation to get there, I would suggest that you examine other options. That is unless these rental packs are the same models that your fellow adults are used to using. By the time we actually left for Philmont I was on my second pack since I could never get the first to adjust properly to my build. (Even with professional assistance.) I can't imagine trying to get an unfamiliar pack to fit properly, and get used to loading it as well, while starting out on the trek of a lifetime. The first day or so will probably have some uncomfortable terrain to cover while your ranger evaluates your overall fitness and it will be really frustrating to have some guys keep stopping to readjust their loads. I may be wrong but I think the rental packs are kept for those unfortunate souls who lose thier own packs to the "luggage black hole" en route to camp.
Just an opinion, hope it helps.
Eric

Subject: [Philmont]: Backpacks
Apparently Philmont will rent external framed packs. I have 2 adults that are considering renting. Has anyone had an experience with these packs? Condition? Size? Comfort? I would think that if they are available at Philmont, they would be big enough, and in 10 day useage condition, but don't want to find out otherwise once we get there. Anyone shed light on this?
