Another option if you aren't able to buy a pack is to check out you local gear outfitter. We have two stores that rent packs very cheap. One of our leaders rented a pack for each of our training hikes and also for the Philtrek.
This way she was used to the pack before she got there, knew that it would fit and be comfy. The store was good to work with her so that she could get the same pack each time. I think she reserved it sota speak.

Apparently Philmont will rent external framed packs. I have 2 adults that are considering renting. Has anyone had an experience with these packs? Condition? Size? Comfort? I would think that if they are available at Philmont, they would be big enough, and in 10 day useage condition, but don't want to find out otherwise once we get there. Anyone shed light on this?
