Look on the internet for TYVIC. It's the house wrap. One crew did
use one and liked it. I just ran out of time. Comes in sizes that
need to be joined. You have to use special tape (Lowes or HD).
Will not grommet, so leave long tails on the corners and use the
larks head around the stone method to join it to its ropes. Also
wash the material a few times to make it quieter.

I used the standard 10 x 12 or so. I disagree with lots on the
utility of the tarp.

I think they are great, but bring light adjustable poles. I think
hiking poles make the tarp too low, and useless for me. I also
think if the poles are important, do not risk them holding up a
tarp. If they are not important, do not bring them.

I probably do not know how to do the tarp right:-)

Coop's guide covers tarps well I think.

Kirk
What size tarp do they use at Philmont for the crew? It is my
understanding
that the one provided is one of those blue plastic ones. I am
looking to buy
a lighter/more useful one for the crew. Also looking into light
weight crew
pots.

Stan

PS Some of the crew will be missing from meeting this weekend. I
plan on
having a follow up meeting the first week in Dec.

There are some new ultra light weight packs that are really a good
suspension system and a big bag. Weigh-in at about 3 lbs.

Lightweight backpacking site
http://www.backpacking.net/

Gregory G Pack is a good 2.7 lbs 2900in3 pack.

GoLite weights under 20 oz and carries 3870in3.

The gear is there, you just have to make some compromises.

So where do you find a 3 pound pack that will do Philmont duty? It
would need about 4500 cu. in. and carry about 35-40 pounds.

I am more than willing to leave my 6 pounder at home. Thirty-five
pounds
sounds great.
