RE: [Philmont]: Water purifiers

I have at least one boy in my next contingent who is allergic to
iodine. He can not use the tablets. Have to pump.

I tried the PolarPur crystals Philmont recommends on my work-ups.
We do it over snow patched mountains of the Blue Ridge. At the
temperatures we worked at, I could not deliver the throughput to
keep my boys hydrated. An hour to make solution, an hour to purify
a nalgene. I often found us with 30 or more bottles to refill after
a full day between water sources. I also am not a big fan of
dropping pills or solution into a camelback in the middle of my
backpack. I was never able to find a way to tell the pure nalgenes
from those waiting to be prue. Just too prone to error for ME after
a long hard day.

There are problems with pumps. Kids will silt them, then you are
stuck. This is especially true when it's raining at Philmont and
the creeks get cloudy. That stuff will not settle out. Time to
boil, if you pump, you won't any more. The filter clogs quickly.
Some filters backwash, a good feature:-)

I used Pur, still have them, still like them. There are others that
are better, but I do not know which.

I bring 2 per crew and extra filters. Costs $200, but I've taken
them twice and still going strong.

Subject: [Philmont]: Water purifiers

My question today is: are water filters really necessary? With the
purification tabs being issued, is the extra weight, bulk worth the
hassle. I've heard that usually the water is ok if you can get past
the smell and taste of the iodine.( Not like you have much of a
choice) I see they aren't cheap, and their are so many to choose
from, with some filtering out viruses, some don't
Etc............What's the word on this subject?
