Read Coop's Advisor's Guide

Establish your policies early and in writing. ESPECIALLY your
work-up schedule. Make sure that Philmont is the boy's first
extra-curricular activity. Have them sign a contract. Be able to
drop boys for non-participation or poor social skills. Making a
good crew, that's safe and disciplined, is your goal. I've used
these tools, but never dropped a boy. I really wish I had dropped
one last year; it would have made the trip MUCH more enjoyable.

Establish a budget for your Crew. My Contingent does not manage any
Crew expenses. They have to find their own gear, pay for their own
trips, . Let the parents know how much more you are going to tap
them for. Make them drive or pay for your gas for training trips.
Mine averaged 500 miles.

Train the boys so that they are ready to lead at or before Philmont.

Have lots of fun. My wife and I took a Crew of boys last time. We
didn't know any of them, and it was her first backpacking
experience. We had a great time. I enjoyed it better in many ways
than the trip where I had my sons in my Crew.

Subject: [Philmont]: provo crews

I was wondering if anyone else on this list has had experience with
provisional crews. My troop was only able to get one slot this year
and since everyone else who wanted to go has never been, I stepped
out. Then I was informed that my council (National Capital Area)
was looking for advisors for their provisional crews. I recently
went through the application and interview process and was just
informed that I was selected for one of the positions.

This will be an entirely new experience for me. They were supposed
to have the provo crews formed by this past weekend, but that has
been pushed back to January. I imagine it will be quite a challenge
as everyone will be from different troops in different areas
(getting everyone together for shakedowns should be fun!). But I
figure it will be a rewarding experience as well, seeing these kids
who used to not even know each come together to work as a team.

Any advice/information about working with provisional crews would be
appreciated.

Thanks in advance,

Brian Gannon
