Brian,
I was an advisor form both a troop crew and a provisional crew. I have to
say, by far, I enjoyed the provisional experience better. Maybe I enjoyed
it more because, I had already been to Philmont before or possibly, I just
enjoyed the group of young men and the other advisors.

My only piece of advice is have a shakedown hike. We feel into the category
of knowing exactly who was going only months before we departed. Prior to
the trek, we had an organizational meeting and an overnighter. We trained
during the hike on stoves, smellables, crew gear, navigation and other
skills.

We did not have any personality problems to speak of with the guys, even
the ones that had known each other only briefly. Larry, care to chime in?

Howard

Subject: [Philmont]: provo crews

I was wondering if anyone else on this list has had experience with
provisional crews. My troop was only able to get one slot this year and
since everyone else who wanted to go has never been, I stepped out.
Then I was informed that my council (National Capital Area) was looking
for advisors for their provisional crews. I recently went through the
application and interview process and was just informed that I was
selected for one of the positions.

This will be an entirely new experience for me. They were supposed to
have the provo crews formed by this past weekend, but that has been
pushed back to January. I imagine it will be quite a challenge as
everyone will be from different troops in different areas (getting
everyone together for shakedowns should be fun!). But I figure it will
be a rewarding experience as well, seeing these kids who used to not
even know each come together to work as a team.

Any advice/information about working with provisional crews would be
appreciated.

Thanks in advance,
Brian Gannon
