[Philmont]: Choosing a Trek

Dave Martin was right when he noted that itineraries may change from year
to year. Last year, our crew looked at previous year treks and choose
terrain and activities then listed priorities. The day the trek book
arrived, I took it to the crew leader who then went over the home of
another crew member. They choose the treks that most closely matched the
priorities of the crew and mailed in the post card.

If you start with the premise that there are no bad treks at Philmont, and
you match the level of difficulty that you are comfortable with, then the
crew should have a great time, no matter what trek you are
on. Homesteading was not on the list of activities our crew was
seeking. Homesteading at Rich Cabins was their favorite activity of the
trek. So getting your desired trek is not always a perfect match of what
trek would end up being the most fun for your crew.
