Depends on where you hike. The cow watering trough (old bath tub, I believe)
at the Lover's Leap camp was a great first-evening-on-the-trail watering hole
for our crew. Good learning experience.
Key words above: "almost" and "you'll have to check"
Be prepared to treat your water. We stayed in plenty of camps where water
treatment was mandatory.
Our crew took a filter but never used it. Thus, it took up space and had
weight in somebody's pack. I was not there at equipment checkout, but I recall
hearing Philmont expected crews to treat water with Polar Pure even if they
planned to use a filter. Anyone on this list recall the "rule" on Polar Pure and
filters?
We were able to mark (with an X) the bottom of each Nalgene that held drink
mixes and they were separated from the clean water bottles each day. Empties
and partially full drink mix bottles went to bear bags, which can become a
nuisance.
Polar Pure worked just fine for us, even for those who initially didn't think
they'd like the taste. Some of us even survived the entire trek (Trek 4)
without tasting Gatorade.
An aside: Don't lose any of your Polar Pure bottles or you'll have to pay
for 'em when you return to base camp....of course, if you find one on the trail,
you can turn it in for credit ;-) The same goes for bear bags, but that's
another thread.
